Syrian refugees arriving in Toronto over the coming months will face a range of challenges. One particularly difficult challenge is being understood by others.Arabic is widely spoken in Syria, but obviously not as much in Toronto. So, GTA University Lifeline Syria Challenge is offering a linguistic lifeline. It challenges students from four Toronto post-secondary schools — Ryerson, U of T, OCAD University and York — to act as volunteer interpreters.

The Liberal government will miss its self-imposed deadline to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year, instead pledging to meet a reduced target by the end of February 2016.

The government will also count privately sponsored refugees against the total federal goal of 25,000, as well as any Syrian refugee who arrived since the Liberals took power in early November.

Even though its enrolment remains strong, Toronto’s one-of-a-kind high school for new immigrants could be forced to move into Danforth Collegiate and the building sold, under an option now being considered by a review committee.

The potential plans for 10 high schools in the Toronto-Danforth/East York area were unveiled Monday night at a public meeting — on the eve of the federal government’s announcement of plans to settle a wave of Syrian refugees in Canada, which had some questioning such a move for the city’s unique “newcomer high.”

Some security screening will be conducted on Canadian soil as the Liberals push to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees by the end of the year, Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale says.

Goodale told reporters that security checks on the refugees will be conducted both before and after the refugees begin arriving in Canada.

The Liberal government is marshalling its most senior cabinet ministers to shepherd the massive task of bringing in thousands of Syrian refugees by the end of the year.“The commitment is to have 25,000 of them here by the end of the year. 

We are working on the logistics of that,” Immigration and Refugees Minister John McCallum told reporters Monday in the House of Commons.

The Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, today announced the creation of a new Cabinet ad hoc committee to help bring Syrian refugees to Canada.

An Ad Hoc Committee on Refugees will be a driving force in delivering on the government’s commitment to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of 2015.

Toronto-based Lifeline Syria was launched in June to help Canadians sponsor Syrian refugees to Canada. Private sponsors include community groups, churches and organizations that hold a sponsorship agreement with Ottawa.  However, individual citizens can also form what are known as "groups of five" - made up of five individuals or more - to sponsor Syrian refugees.
